FATHER, DAUGHTER DUO TO SHARE THEIR CANCER STORY

Stouffville cancer survivors Katie and Ab Van Dusen will address participants in the Stouffville Terry Fox Run Sunday, Sept. 15, in Stouffville Memorial Park. They’ve been named ambassadors of this year’s Stouffville run.

Katie, 44, was diagnosed with childhood leukemia at age 4. 

Her father, Ab, has dealt with two cancer diagnoses. First was prostate cancer in 2004. It’s been in remission for 16 years. 

The second occurrence, rectal cancer in 2020, has been in remission since 2022. Now 78, he’s currently undergoing treatment at Princess Margaret and Markham Stouffville hospitals for a metastasis, the spread of cancer cells, to his lungs.

There’s still time to team up for Terry Fox, Stouffville. Thirty-three teams, including sports clubs, families, businesses and churches, are already registered. You can sign up as a team or individual at: terryfox-stouffville.ca

The 2023 event drew approximately 1,000 participants and volunteers who raised more than $76,000 for cancer research. Since 1982, the Stouffville run has raised $2.2 million.

New this year, Stouffville’s many sports teams and organizations are being challenged to take part. 

Festivities begin at 12 noon featuring entertainment by Kendall Lilly and Ruby Tuesday, a display of classic cars by the Markham Stouffville Cruisers, refreshments and children’s activities.

Stouffville radio station 102.9 WhiStle FM will broadcast live from the run Sunday from noon to 2 p.m.

The opening ceremonies begin at 1 p.m.

This year’s run will follow a 5K course through southern Stouffville that begins and ends in the park. With safety in mind, some changes to the route have been made to keep participants on municipal sidewalks and off streets. A 2K route is also provided.

You can run, walk, cycle, ride a wheelchair, push a stroller or rollerblade.

Entertainment will be provided at water stations along the route by local favourites Tom Pullin, the Tanya Porter drum group and Kendall Lily. Players on the Stouffville Spirit Jr. A Hockey Club will be volunteering at the stations and the finish line.

Organizers are again sending a special invitation to cancer survivors in the community – like the Van Dusens.

Survivors are given special red T-shirts and lawn signs recognizing their survivor status.

Terry Fox shirts are being sold at Stouffville Farmer’s Market, 6240 Main Street, Stouffville on Saturday 7 Sept. 8-2pm

They’re also available on Run Day Sunday Sept 15 at Memorial Park before the event. Festivities begin at 12noon.
