2022 Stouffville terry Fox Run Returns to Memorial Park

Local event has raised more than $2.1 million for cancer research since 1982

June 11, 2022, STOUFFVILLE, ON – Save the date, Stouffville. The Terry Fox Run is returning to Memorial Park after a two-year COVID hiatus on Sept. 18, 2022,.

The last run, in 2019, drew approximately 800 participants and volunteers who raised more than $50,000 for cancer research. Since 1982, the Stouffville Run has raised $2.1 million.

“Even during the past two years, when we couldn’t all be together, Stouffville came through in the name of Terry,” said run chair Stacey Fitzpatrick.  “Now, we’re so excited to be able to gather together again.”

In 2020 and 2021, participants were asked to take part virtually within their bubble in their own neighbourhoods.

This year’s run will follow the same 5K course through southern Stouffville that participants have used the past several years. You can run, walk, cycle or rollerblade.

Organizers are again sending a special invitation to Cancer survivors.

“They are the reason we’re all in Memorial Park for the day,” said FitzPatrick. “Seeing all those survivors in their red shirts approach the stage to begin our run every September makes it all so worthwhile for all our participants and volunteers.”

“If you are a survivor or know of one, we want to honour them.”

Survivors are given those special red T-shirts and lawn signs recognizing their survivor status.

Stouffville businesses, service clubs, churches and families are encouraged to form a team, like the 30 teams who took part in the 2019 run. Teams receive special recognition during the event. They can pre-order Terry Fox T-shirts with their team name printed on them.

To enter a team or register a survivor email tfox.stouffville@gmail.com or call 416-768-6971.

WHAT: A virtual Terry Fox Run: One Day. Your way. We will unite in spirit, not in person!

WHERE: Wherever you are! Around your neighbourhood, backyard, down the street or around the block. Walk, Ride, Run!

HOW: Register as an individual, family, or virtual team – start your fundraising effort!

WHY: Because cancer research cannot wait for COVID-19 to be over! Because it’s the 41st anniversary of TERRY’S MARATHON OF HOPE!

The 40th anniversary edition Terry Fox Run will take place this year – with a twist.

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first-ever virtual Terry Fox Run will be held in 650 communities across Canada – including Whitchurch-Stouffville.

In these uncertain times, the one certainty we have is that cancer is not waiting for COVID to be over.

This year, Canadians will unite in spirit, not in person, for their own version of the Run on Sept. 20, 2020. “Terry Fox Run 2020. One Day. Your Way.” Millions of Terry Foxers will continue to honour Terry, aided by new technology that will enhance the virtual participation experience by providing a way to “get fundraising, get inspired and get fit.”

The Stouffville Terry Fox Run, which was first held in 1982, surpassed the $2 million mark last year. More than 800 people gathered in Stouffville Memorial before heading out on 2 and 5k courses through south Stouffville. They raised $68,000 for cancer research.

“We can’t be gathering by the hundreds in park again this year,” said Stouffville run co-ordinator Stacey FitzPatrick. “But we can participate within our own family and social bubbles. And we can take part safely on our Stouffville streets, rural roads, backyards and home treadmills.”

Registration for individuals and teams opened nationally May 20 and business has been brisk. You can register and order your 2020 Terry T-shirt by visiting https://terryfox.org/run/

Look for Stouffville cancer survivors, celebrities, politicians and athletes telling their stories and talking about Terry Fox and his run in videos on social media this summer.

Adding to the excitement of this special 40th anniversary year, adidas Canada has harkened back to their storied history with Terry by announcing a limited edition nine-piece collection of Terry Fox merchandise, including the release of the original Orion running shoes. All net proceeds of the collection will go to The Terry Fox Foundation to support the best and brightest in Canadian cancer research.

“Terry once said, “Anything is possible if you try,” said the Terry Fox Foundation’s Interim Executive Director, Ara Sahakian. “In 2020, a year where we are all learning to live life differently, there is only one way forward for The Terry Fox Foundation: Terry’s way. We have to try.”
